Five times the Election Commission has been asked to consider a recall petition. Four times the Commission has voted to disapprove the petition (one petition was withdrawn). All five petitions were written by the same Allendale resident attempting to recall the same school board member.
Every two years, schools in Ottawa County administer the Youth Assessment Survey to current 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. Parents are not privy to the survey questions. In most districts, it is assumed they give their student permission to participate unless they turn in a form to opt out.
On September 29, 2021, the National School Board Association (NSBA) sent a letter to The White House asking for federal law enforcement to assist them in dealing with parents who were coming to school board meetings to protest mask mandates and critical race theory curriculum. NSBA said the parents’ actions could be the equivalent of domestic terrorists and hate crimes.
When it comes to what is age-appropriate, should the Allendale school board care equally about protecting students’ bodies and minds? Is mental and emotional appropriateness of content a board concern? And why are some board members hesitant for teachers to fill out a superintendent survey? A survey hasn’t been done in Allendale since 2020.
From the moment Corey Mango and Liz Ramey took their seats, the Allendale Board of Education has taken bold steps. And according to many parents, bold steps were welcomed. During the first post-election board meeting on January 9, 2023, Mr. Mango was appointed president.
