After 44 years of service in law enforcement, Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker is retiring.

Monday, January 29, 2024, Kempker announced that he would not be seeking re-election. Kempker has served 44 years in law enforcement, 35 of those at the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office starting in 1989. The last seven years he has served as the elected County Sheriff.
“This has been a rewarding career serving the citizens of Ottawa County. The entire staff of the Sheriff’s Office makes the agency what I and many others consider one of the finest Sheriff’s Offices in the State of Michigan,” Kempker said.
As for future plans, Kempker plans to spend more time with family and follow other areas of interest within Ottawa County.
“It has been a privilege to be able to work with so many talented and dedicated professionals over the years. They are dedicated to serving our communities to provide safe and secure environments.”
Kempker’s term ends on December 31, 2024.
