Ottawa County Board of Commissioners Meeting
Hang with me here because this may be a little hard to follow.
A couple years ago I was going through an identity crisis. I just didn’t feel like myself. So, I visited the Ottawa County Health Department website to look for some helpful resources. I saw something on the website, offered through advertised places such as Planned Parenthood, called “affirming care.” This intrigued me so I sought help with some affirmation therapy. I went to a therapist and told him that I felt like my identity was not what I was at the time. I told him I felt like I was in the body of a highly qualified doctor and health expert.
As part of affirming care, the therapist stated no one knows myself better than me. That’s what affirming care is.
So, I’m here to announce my transition to the public as Dr. Roger, Health Expert. As such, I’d like to be considered for the position of Ottawa County Health Department Director, alongside Nate Kelly and Adeline Hambley. As someone who identifies as highly qualified, I believe myself to be the best choice. I’m sure this sounds like a joke, but I assure you it isn’t.
And, if you deny my new identity, you’re committing violence against me.
Recently GVSU had a Sex Ed Week sponsored, among others, by the Ottawa County Public Health Department. Under the lead of Adeline Hambley, affirming language and support messaging was prevalent. So, if the current Health Department and its temporary director, Ms. Hambley, truly believe in affirming care, they must affirm my self-identity is real.
And, to be taken seriously, the dominant culture system of qualifications and credentials are therefore oppressive because no one knows me better than, well, me.
With that said, any criticism of Nate Kelly or myself as not being qualified is irrelevant, as long as he and I believe ourselves to be the most qualified. And, if Mr. Kelly does believe that, I will humbly withdraw my name from consideration, as I must affirm his belief in himself as well. And, he is the best candidate.
But, if that doesn’t sound right, that’s okay because blanket affirmation of someone’s self-identity isn’t usually the best practice.
And, if you disagree with affirmation therapy that leads to someone self-identifying as something they’re not, then you must still care about qualifications and credentials. If so, then anyone that supports, pushes, sponsors, or promotes affirming care is obviously a poor choice for the Ottawa County Health Department Director.
That being your position, then Adeline Hambley is unqualified or disqualified from consideration because she promotes this nonsense. With that settled, that leaves us two choices: Nate Kelly and myself. And, with it down to just the two of us, I’ll again humbly withdraw my name and support Nate Kelly. He is now the obvious choice moving forward by credentials, qualifications, decision-making, and reality.
To paraphrase Rush Limbaugh, sometimes you have to illustrate the absurd with the absurdity.
